geo 5 The Amazon Rainforet

The Amazon rainforst covers most of the Amazon basin of South America. Also, it is half of the world's remainging rainforest. It absords carbon dioxide, and releases oxygen; therefore, it is important for our living.

The climate:

-It is a tropical climate and there is no summer and winter there. It is hot and humid throughout the year with the avergage of 80.7F.

-It rains almost the whole year and the precipitation varies seasonally.

Animals & Plants:

- There are over 500 mammals, 175 lizard and over 300 other reptile specicies and 1/3 of the worlds's birds live in Amazon rainforst.

- Some unique animals and plants:
                                                                        Spider Money

capibara-biggest rodent on Earth

Toucan

Amazon water lily

Orchids

The four layers of the Amazon rainforst:

each layer has its own unique ecosystems with plants and animals

-The emergent layer is the tallest layer, where trees can be as tall as 200 feet, and rise above canopy. The leaves are samll and covered with a thick waxy surface to hold water. Trunks can be up to 16 feet and braced by massive buttress roots

-The canopy layer is the second tallest layer and also the main layer of the rainforest. The trees have smooth, oval leaves and this allows water to flow off the leaf quickly and therefore prevents the growth of fungi, ,mosses. Also, the canopy;s leaves are very dense and filter out about 80% of the sunliget. Furthermore, many flowers and fruit grow in this layer. Epiphytes cover ecery available surface.

- The understory only get about 2-5% of the available sunlight. Plants are finding their ways to this shadowy existence. Their leaves grow large and in dark green and the height is often under 12 feet. Because of little air movement, they reaply on insects and animals to pollinate their flowers.

-The forest floor is the lowest layer in rainforest with only about 2% sunlight. The floor is littered with decomposing vegetation and organisms Tree roots stay close to the surface to access nutrients.

And now, because of deforestation and industrialization, the living of the animals and plants in the Amazon rainforst are threaten. Also, the Amazon rainforst is the biggest forest in the world and it plays an important role in climate change.
